For Engineering students at UBC

You are being trained to solve problems that will not stay well-defined.

If you are in Engineering at UBC, you are surrounded by smart, driven people solving hard technical problems under pressure. You are taught to optimize, to deliver, to meet constraints, to build things that work.

What you are not taught is how fragile that structure becomes once the constraints change.

And they are changing fast.

Two students collaborate on a technical project in a modern lab.

The hidden risk in engineering careers right now

AI is not replacing engineers wholesale.
It is compressing the value of narrow technical execution.

Tasks that once differentiated juniors:

  • drafting
  • simulation setup
  • optimization passes
  • documentation
  • even portions of design

are becoming cheaper, faster, and easier to replicate. At the same time:

  • competition for “good” roles is increasing
  • career paths are becoming less linear
  • fewer people are hired to do deeper work, faster

This creates a quiet pressure engineers rarely talk about:

If you are only legible as a set of technical skills, you are easier to substitute.

Why traditional engineering networking does not protect you

Most engineering networking happens inside:

  • your program
  • your cohort
  • your design team
  • your co-op pipeline

That works until it doesn’t.

These networks are:

  • siloed (mostly people just like you)
  • project-bound (they dissolve when the term ends)
  • credential-gated (titles and grades matter more than adaptability)

They are good at helping you get your first role.
They are bad at helping you adapt when roles change, projects end, or paths diverge.

And AI accelerates that divergence.

What actually makes engineers resilient now

The engineers who do well over time are not the ones with the cleanest resumes.

They are the ones who:

  • are embedded in multiple overlapping networks
  • understand problems beyond their immediate discipline
  • can move laterally when a role narrows or disappears
  • are known by people who think differently than they do

In other words: they are connected across boundaries, not just optimized within them.

That is what intrast is for.

intrast, for engineers

intrast is not another networking platform and it is not a social feed.

For engineers, it functions as...

...a way to make your skills visible outside your program

...a way to find collaborators, testers, organizers, and builders early

...a way to stay connected to people after projects end

...a way to explore problems that are not yet formal job postings

You are not competing for attention.
You are making yourself findable to the people you will need later.

How engineering students typically use intrast

Engineering students tend to use intrast to:

  • find people outside Applied Science who can pressure-test ideas
  • connect with organizers, designers, or domain experts early
  • stay in loose contact with collaborators beyond a single term
  • explore alternative paths without burning bridges

You do not need to “build a brand.”
You do not need to post content.
You do not need to know exactly where you are going.

You just need to stop being isolated inside one pipeline.

This is preparation, not prediction

You do not need to guess how AI will change your field.

You need people who can change with you.

intrast helps you build those connections while the stakes are low, before urgency forces your hand.

Before you need a network, it’s already here.
